The phrase “off the beaten path” is usually used to describe travel destinations that are not as well-known or popular as others. This type of travel can be very rewarding and exciting, but it can also be challenging for travelers. Taking the road less traveled can give travelers an experience that is unlike anything else. It can also make them feel more accomplished and confident. This is why it is so important to take the time to explore and discover a destination before recommending it to others. Whether it is a trip to a remote mountain village or a remote island getaway, off-the-beaten-path travel can provide a unique and fulfilling experience.

It is also a great way to escape the tourist bubble and truly get to know a country and its people. This type of travel can be a life-changing experience that will only fuel your love and passion for traveling. There is a growing need for tourism to transform into a more sustainable form. Specifically, a shift towards more alternative and authentic experiences with lower impacts on the natural and social environment is needed. Experienced tourists that intentionally seek immersive and off-the-beaten-track travel are seen as potential ambassadors for such a change (Pappalepore & al., 2010).

However, empirical evidence is scarce on the relationship between being an experienced tourist and off-the-beaten-track travel behavior. Furthermore, it is unknown whether these experienced tourists realize their role as travel pioneers paving the way for mass tourism – a key concern given their online sharing behavior. Denmark might not immediately spring to mind when thinking of off-the-beaten-path destinations, but it is a very underrated country with lots to offer. From medieval-era cobblestone streets in the city centers to breathtaking natural wonders, there is something for everyone here. Transylvania is another underrated travel destination that should be on every adventurous traveler’s bucket list.

This vast interior region of Romania is home to an astounding variety of beautiful landscapes, fascinating folklore, and traditional arts that will leave visitors in awe. Japan is an incredible and diverse country, from the stunning volcanic scenery of Takachiho Gorge to the sub-tropical islands of Kagoshima or the dark history of Nagasaki. Those who take the road less traveled can discover hidden treasures like the lava tubes and azure pools at Gekko-Jinja, a cave in the middle of a forest in Yakushima that looks just like Iceland or paddling along a gorge in Kyushu with cascading waterfalls and mountain views. There are so many amazing off-the-beaten-path experiences to be had in this fascinating country!
